Description

In version 2.6 beta:

I have had a few problems to start the rocket, after building Project Apollo. Turns out that 'victories' was set to empty in the scenario I was playing (British Isles).

But the help text for "Space Race" states:

If there are no help texts for these items, it probably means the 'spacerace' server option is off for your game.)

As far as I know, 'spacerace' doesn't work any more, and it's been superseded by 'victories'.

It's also been confusing, because the "About Current Ruleset" section mentions:

You are playing with classic Freeciv rules for single player games.

If the Space Race is disabled, that's not classic Freeciv, is it?

My setup:
This is Freeciv version 2.6.0-beta0 (beta version), gui-gtk-3.0 client.
Built against gtk+ 3.22.11, using 3.22.11
Built against glib 2.52.0, using 2.52.0

I'm playing with the last committed source.

Would you consider it less confusing if word "rules" (that sounds like it includes both ruleset and server settings) would be replaced with more accurate "ruleset", i.e., "You are playing with classic Freeciv ruleset for single player games." ?

That would probably help, but I think we should be more clear on what else may be nonstandard.

I am a translator, so I have been reading all the help texts for Freeciv for a long time, and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. It's true I have never fiddled around with rulesets (but few people ever have), so I don't know exactly what is decided in the ruleset and what depends on server settings.

It was also confusing that the "endspaceship" server variable was set to "enabled", so I thought that may have been enough. Perhaps some warning on "some server variables may have been changed" would help? But I don't know if there is such thing as a standard set of server variables, and it would certainly complicate the answer to the user.

After all, the only thing that had changed from the default rules was the scenario. Can there be some "scenario-based warnings", like "this scenario doesn't contemplate the Space Race"?.

Yes, that's certainly a doc bug.

Turns out that 'victories' was set to empty in the scenario I was playing (British Isles).

That feels like it might also be a bug? I don't see why our map scenarios should change such things from the default.
It's always been there, since the first version was posted to the devel list in Feb 2001. (This had "spacerace=0", in a savefile with 'options="1.7 [...] spacerace"'. Is it possible that it's a default carried over from an even older version?)
Many other map scenarios also disable space race (I haven't checked what other defaults they change). Does anyone who's been around longer than I know of a good reason for this?

Don't know how to deal with the general problem of flagging rule settings that are different from the default. There is "/show changed", but that's not very discoverable or user-friendly and also shows the differences between the server default and current, not the ruleset default.
